So I'm sure you know that the solar eclipse was kind of a big deal. We weren't in the direct path of totality here in Peoria, but still got a great view. It happened at 1:18pm local time. I had just put Owen down for a nap and was answering messages from Miles' teacher about how he was having a hard day emotionally at school. :( Turns out, so was Cooper. Some of the teachers thought it would help Miles to go see Cooper, but seeing each other sent both boys into tears. 😢 I was also in tears finding out about their homesickness... about then, our neighbor, Joe, called and said they had an extra pair of glasses if I'd like to watch the eclipse. So I totally (totality?) pulled my lawn chair over and watched with them. It was a good distraction.
Owen found the darkness at nap time was great. 😏
One of Derek's co-workers had an extra pair of super shades.
...so Derek and some of the guys sat outside the office to watch.
At the boys' school, only the oldest grade, 4th, got to actually go outside to watch. The rest of them watched NASA's live feed in their classrooms. Cooper's class got instructions on how to wear the glasses correctly to protect their eyes.
Then got to go out to the playground to watch the whole thing.
The school sent notes home explaining the day's plan to the parents, and also gave excused absences to anyone who wanted to take their kids out of school and travel to the path of totality. Apparently a lot of people headed to Southern Illinois! The kids at school had a great time viewing it together. Only one of Cooper's classmates got sent inside for not wearing the glasses! ha.
