We were out in the back yard one day and Miles came running from the side of the house saying he'd encountered a chipmunk and it didn't move when he walked up to it! I went with him to check it out and laughed when I saw bunnies, rather than chipmunks. Apparently Miles had been so startled he didn't look closely!
Upon further investigation, we found that there were SIX baby bunnies living at the side of our house.
I told the boys not to touch them, and let their Mama take care of them. This didn't stop the boys from doing everything except actually touching them!
Then the next day, Derek needed to mow the lawn. He was being super cautious knowing there were baby bunnies in the yard. And, as he mowed, he came across one he needed to move out of the way of the mower. Once Derek had touched one, all bets were off! Ha.
Bunny hunting and holding was set in motion!
Everyone wanted to touch one.
And hold one...
And hug him and squeeze him and call him George. Oh, sorry, Loony Toons cartoon reference.
It was all pretty exciting!
They kept one in a tub until I told them they couldn't keep it forever.
But they were able to find at least one to play with each day for a few days.
And either the little thing didn't mind, or it had given up it's fight.
As far as I know, no baby bunnies were injured during play time with the boys.
About three days after they'd first spotted them...
And played with them...
Cooper picked one up and it jumped out of his arms and onto the boat cover! hahahahah! I had to come grab it and get it down. Also, no baby bunnies were harmed during this event.
I cannot however, promise that there wasn't one harmed when this HUGE red-tailed hawk landed in our yard. We see it often, but now we're pretty sure it was hanging around for the bunny snacks.
We haven't seen any bunnies for a while but the boys are always keeping an eye out!
