"Snap Trappers"

On a routine grocery shopping trip to Aldi, we found they had Venus Fly Traps marked down.  I text Derek this photo and said, "Should we get one?" and he replied, "Get two.".  Ha!

So two of these bug eating plants came home with us.

And got plenty of attention.  The boys were so curious about it.

When Derek got home from work, they did some research about how to take care of it, and how to feed it bugs.

And there was great celebration when one of the traps closed onto a bug for the first time!

Miles has been delighted to search for bugs to 'feed' it.  He always looks for bugs, of course, but this has amped his excitement level to a new height!

We've had a lot of fun watching them.  Apparently they don't actually need bugs, since they use photosynthesis.   But what fun is a "Snap Trapper", as Miles calls them, if you don't feed it bugs.

Snap Trappers are dragons from the "How to Train Your Dragon" TV Series.  (FYI)

Miles had fed them lots of ants and also pulled the wings off of a huge fly and fed it to the plant. We found a stink bug in the house one day and Miles was determined to feed it to his snap trapper.  I told him he could try, but that it was probably too big.  A few minutes later, I heard his rejoicing!  That crazy plant grabbed a live stink bug!

Though I'm slightly concerned it choked it.  😕

Maybe it's that they're not getting enough sun, or we over watered them, but our fly traps aren't looking so great.

We'll try to revive them, but the days of feeding snap trappers may soon be over at our house.

It was fun while it lasted!
