Maybe you've picked up on it here, or maybe you follow me on Facebook or Instagram, but I enjoy college sports and cheering on my team. But the confusing part for you might be figuring out who that team is. So let me try to clear up the confusion a little. First, there was Husker football.
My family moved to Nebraska when I three years old and lived there until I was sixteen. Very developmental years. :) If you live, or ever lived in Nebraska, you're a Husker football fan. It comes with the territory. It probably helped that during those years, Nebraska football was at it's best with Tom Osborne, Tommy Frazier and games that still make me dislike any Florida college football team.
I also come from a long line of Nebraska football fans.
And am trying my best to pass down this loyalty to my little family.
Who are mostly willing. Go Big Red!
Next, there was Kansas Basketball. Football is okay, but basketball is the game I really love. I started following Jayhawk basketball while my family still lived in Nebraska, but a move to Kansas when I was sixteen increased my level of ability to do so.
Thankfully I have a husband who puts up with my addiction.
And my kids don't mind being dressed in KU attire and then posing for a photo.
Not that they've ever been given a choice. :)
They're learning it's what we do and go with it.
Derek too... :)
We've been known to dress up Jayhawk apparel for church if a tournament game falls on Sunday...but only in March. Oh, how I love the madness!
"Rock Chalk" is one of the first phrases I taught my boys.
And this year we've been working on the chant.
Having witnessed it in Allen Fieldhouse first hand, I love to listen for the chant when I'm watching on TV, it gives me goosebumps every time. In this video the chant comes right after they sing the alma mater, they do this before games. But when the team is about to win they do the chant again and the whole arena hums.
Rock Chalk!
And that brings us to Wichita State basketball.
My family moved to Wichita when I was sixteen and are still there.
My little brother is a WSU graduate:
But I didn't really follow Shocker basketball until they made it to the final four last March. It gave me someone to cheer for since my Jayhawks were already knocked out.
Derek and I got the chance to attend a WSU game over Christmas this year and had a blast. But more proof we're not long time fans is that we had to go buy shirts to wear to the game since we didn't own any. Bandwagon fans, right here. Ha.
But we've since acquired the boys some shirts too.
We've enjoyed cheering on the Shockers, who have had an excellent season so far.
Making it more fun for me, we live in Bradley Brave territory and the Braves are a Wichita State rival. We have several friends that are Bradley fans and alums, making WSU's success even better.
There are conflicts to this dual loyalty though.
We've enjoyed following the Shockers this year. But I have to admit when the games conflict I find myself watching KU. And I always want to see Kansas do well in the NCAA Tournament, but it would be fun to see WSU go all the way this year too. That statement completely contradicts itself, I know. Some people don't approve of cheering for both Kansas teams, but we're having fun doing so!
LOVE THIS POST! A lot of history there.
