Oh Dear, What's in Your Ear?!

One morning this week I saw Cooper was playing with an airsoft pellet. (a small plastic bb for a toy gun)  Later that afternoon I saw him with his finger in his ear and he said,  "That's a BB"!  WHAT?!  I asked him if he put that bb in his ear and he said he did.  But when I looked I couldn't see it...until I got a flashlight!  Then, there it was, so DEEP in his ear canal I couldn't even see the whole thing!  I didn't want to try to get it out for fear of pushing it further in or damaging his ear.  So... I called our family doctor who made him an appointment right away. (When you get to the end of this much too long story,
you'll understand why I later wished we wouldn't have gotten in so soon.)  I called Derek (again) and through tears told him I didn't want to take Cooper to the doctor and DID NOT want to have to hold him down while he got a pellet dug out of his ear.  Being the loving husband he is, and saying what any husband whose wife calls them crying would say, Derek promised to try to meet us at the doctor's office as soon as his current meeting was over.

Derek made it to the office while we were waiting to see the doctor.
When he got there I went to show him the bb and was shocked when we looked in Cooper's ear and could actually see it!  Oh brother.  It was working it's way out!

We still didn't mess with it, we were already at the doctor,
might as well let him do it.  But when we saw Cooper mess with his ear,
Derek looked, and all he did was wiggle Cooper's ear around a little and...
It came out.  Oh brother.

The doctor came in about three seconds after it came out.  Oh brother.  He went ahead and looked at Coop's ear to make sure it looked okay.  It did.  Oh brother. (did I say that already?)  The only tears we had were when the doctor took the bb and we told Coop he couldn't take it home.  Oh brother.  No way, kid.  :)

The doctor traded him for a sucker.
Enjoy it, Cooper, that was one expensive sucker!

We really like our family doctor.  We've just seen him way too often as of late.
Also: I apologize for this much more wordy than normal post.  Maybe I'm traumatized.

  1. At least you got a cute story out of it! Cooper seems like he's good for that.

  2. I had to smile when he cried he couldnt take it home. When my sister was younger she somehow shoved a french fry up her nose and it was in there so good she had to go to the doctor to have it removed. oh children!

  3. LOL! (sorry, I shouldn't laugh...hehe) I'm glad it didn't hurt his ear! Taking your kids to the dr is like taking your car to the mechanic--once you get there it starts running fine. LOL!

  5. When you first saw it, it was deep in his ear. It would have been hard to guess that it would come out on its own, but Dad's are good at these kind of things. At least in my house they are.

  6. I would have been worried too! Better that it came out easy and the doctor didn't have to do much then for it to have hurt his ear drum and hurt to get out! Poor Cooper - hopefully he won't do it again!
