Stay-cation: Zoo

Next stay-cation activity: The Zoo!

Something we meant to do long ago...
Derek and I have lived here four years and this was the fist time we've visited the Kansas City Zoo.

When we got there they were cleaning out the sea lion tank.
Vince the sea lion still came out to say, "Hi".

Then it was off to see some birds:

And a monkey or two:

We spent most of the time following Cooper around as he yelled, "Look at this guy!"

Good thing this bird was behind glass... he acted like he wanted to eat Cooper's finger:

Next were the elephants:

A highlight of Cooper's zoo trip: One of the elephants went potty. :-/
(It was pretty impressive, I guess, or maybe just amazing.)

We got a really nice close up of the hippos since it was feeding time!

Cooper loved them and didn't want to leave...

When we saw this muddy rhino Cooper said, "He's just sad. He needs a bath."

Cooper enjoyed the chimpanzees:

And does a pretty good chimp impression:

There are quite a few bridges on the walkways.
And the turtles sit under them...I'm guessing they get fed a lot.
Cooper would have sat right there and watched turtles for hours:

See, here he is needing an attitude adjustment when it was time to move on:

We saw the gorilla... he was sleeping soundly:

We relaxed for a while eating the picnic lunch we'd packed:

And then caught up with Vince again for the sea lion show:

There was one bird cage you could go inside.
We got there at feeding time and the birds were very friendly:

Cooper was so excited when this one sat on Daddy's head!
A few minutes later a bird nibbled on Cooper's finger and broke his heart
(I don't think it hurt at all) and he had a good cry over it.

Cooper rode the carousel with Mommy:

And climbed to the top of this tree house with Daddy:

Fed some goats:

And saw some kangaroos. These guys aren't in a cage! They're just off the path:

He made friends with this sheep:

But he didn't realize another one had snuck up behind him:

Until Derek told him to take a look:

"Help, Daddy!"

He was okay with another friend after the surprise was over:

Then Derek went to the food machine:

That's when sheep attack:

And this guy must have smelled the leftovers from our picnic:

Despite being a little overwhelmed by the hungry sheep...

Cooper (and Derek & I) had a great day running around the zoo!

  1. If you put this post into book form, every toddler in America would read it over and over and have it memorized in no time. If you decide to do that, I want a copy for my church nursery!! (No joke, this could be a book!!)

  3. You got some great pictures! I love how they are so expressive about what they see at this age. It makes everything more fun! My favorite picture is Cooper holding onto Derek's legs while surrounded by sheep. That one should be blown up and framed, or at least entered into a contest!

  4. Cute post! Just be glad it wasn't the hippo that went potty. I have a memory of that happening on a zoo trip--very explosive, let's just say. LOL!

  7. It may seem crazy, but the KC zoo was part of our honeymoon 30 years ago! It was so fun to see all of these fun pictures of Cooper enjoying the zoo with Mommy and Daddy!
